(Semi-)watchin' the Fox News Channel this morning and there's Jerry Garcia's name across the bottom-of-the-screen news scroll.

This was just minutes ago (6:40-ish A.M. eastern time.)

Something about Jerry newsworthy enough to be mentioned in the scroll? (I didn't see the whole dealie but it mentioned Deborah Koons and somethin' 'bout "restoring tapes" . . . hmmmm . . .)

Of course i could look it up but I'm quite lazy right now so someone else can post up the details.

Here ya go you idle fellow!

International Herald Tribune
Jerry Garcia's widow sues for access to unpublished tapes of guitarist's musical performances

The Associated Press
Wednesday, February 7, 2007
SAN RAFAEL, California

The widow of the Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia is suing to gain access to unpublished tapes of her late husband's musical performances.

Deborah Koons Garcia filed a civil suit Jan. 31 in Marin County Superior Court against a limited liability corporation, comprised of the rocker's beneficiaries including Koons Garcia, that oversees business involving his estate.

According to the lawsuit, Koons Garcia wants to professionally restore the so-called "Garcia Tapes," but others in the limited liability corporation have stalled the process. The suit asks a judge to clarify the terms of the agreement that led to the formation of the business entity.

Koons Garcia claims the corporation had been scheduled to dissolve by Dec. 31, 2005, but continues to exist.

The lawsuit is just the latest in a prolonged legal battle among Jerry Garcia's beneficiaries.

Some have filed their own lawsuit against Koons Garcia in an effort to maintain the corporation. The rocker's daughter, Keelin Noel Garcia, 19, also has sued Koons Garcia for allegedly shoddy financial oversight of the estate.

Attorney Lawrence Rockwell, who represents several of the defendants in the Jan. 31 lawsuit, could not be reached for comment.

A hearing is scheduled for April 13.

c-c-c, can't we all just...get along?
It's a shame that so many are fighting over this. Apparently there wasn't much in the way of a will to go by when he died, or if there was, I guess the leeches, I mean lawyers were able to find ways around it. I seem to remember seeing Mountain Girl in court after his death saying she'd heard that Koons had quoted Jerry as saying that MG's & his marriage was "a sham." This was when all of the early fighting was going on over the estate.
I can't say that I've ever heard of ANYONE'S estate, regardless of how large or small it was, where there wasn't some bad feelings among the relatives, friends, & business associates as to who thought they deserved more than what they got out of the person's death. My wife's grandmother's estate, her cousin's estate, my aunt's estate, your aunt's estate, your grandfather's estate, etc, all had instances where there were some who thought they deserved more & others deserved less than what they ultimately got. I'm sure we all remember Anna-Nicole Smith & the hundred's of millions she said she was "willed" by J. Howard Marshall, and the fight his son took up because of it. The Jerry Garcia Estate situation doesn't seem to be any different, but I guess as long as the performances keep coming, we'll leave the fighting to the family.
How about some JG tea to go with that/their wine (whine)? They should stick to JG t-shirts & yes, restored/remastered CD's & downloads.

Forget about the tapes, she needs to try and get some of the tie action. That's where the real cash is.

I'm sure Jerry is just tickled pick by this overwhelming display of peace and love being exhibited by his family. Ridiculous.

I guess it's always the way. When the big beast of the jungle falls the jackals and hyenas slink out from their dens to fight over the remains.

Extraordinarily talented people are, after all, just people with faults and problems made worse by greatness. Jerry did better than say, Vincent Van Gogh, missing parts aside. As for spouses, well....there ain't no accountin' for taste.

Well, well, well. Here's a big surprise. Jerry's personal life was a constant mess they he chose never to clean up. All these wives and ex-wives and daughters from wives and ex-wives. ANd then those pesky band members. And of course the constant stream of bad legal advice.

Them tapes be worth a lotta money, and Debs is going to be sure she gets as much as she can. Pretty good for a "wife" who lived in a separate residence.

Maybe this one will also be on Court TV. Maybe the lawyers will search far and wide for witnesses for this and that. Maybe all the tapes will be played in court and some industrious head will sneak a patch in. Maybe we can all sign on as expert witnesses.

Maybe we will all realize that these people we idolize as musicians are just as fucked up as the rest of us. A little Jerry Garcia wine, anyone?

Unfortunately true, ghost, although methinks you're a little harsh. But - the fact remains, and it's refreshing to see, that we need to remain conscious, and learn from the fact that Garcia (and God I love the man above all) was a SUPREMELY disfunctional fuck-up in his personal life and the people he loved. It's a shame (I'm a psychologist) cause with a little help, Jerry's life could've been long and sweet.
Yeah, try watching your father drown and getting your finger chopped off at age 7 - and never getting any counseling help to deal with it. Rough shit, don't know how I would've handled it as a kid - how about you? So we can't judge.
But heroin (and crack) read Crosby's book, takes the place of personal relationships in one's life. No one really gets close to you. If Jerry had dealt with his demons, perhaps he would have been more healthy in his choice of relationships. One can only speculate.

I've never liked Koons, I'd like to be proven wrong because I don't want to believe Jerry would have allowed someone to use him (marry for money) like that. I've read the Blair book, etc. so I know the basics. But we really don't know the real story, few people I imagine really do about Jerry and Koons. ???
If she suceeds in releasing lots of unheard JGB material - then, well ??? Bad Karma transforming into positive?
I don't know, but we'd sure like to hear those tapes yes??

Reminds me of another famous band. Go listen to "Sue Me, Sue You Blues" by George Harrison.
and so on....

" Pretty good for a "wife" who lived in a separate residence. "

Yeah and for all of what? a year and a half? Then she has the nerve to block out TWO of the mothers of his children ( didn't hear anything about Sara ) from his memorial? Don't know her but she seems like a real Bitch by her actions.

More power to ANY of his kids if they're asking for something, anything. Face it, Jerry was NOT around as a Dad. Maybe I'm biased because of my kids but I personally think kids are OWED your parenting. Being that they didn't get much or any of that from Jer I think they are damn well owed more of that estate than Koons.

I knew you'd agree man. I can't fathom having that short of a relationship with someone then feeling entitled to the majority of their estate. She doesn't even have any kids to think of. And I damn well can't understand someone that would shut the kids out. Also, regardless of what she thinks of Jerry's exes or anything he told her it is a FACT that these women raised his kids pretty much on their own. How can you not give them their due? I'm sorry but her past actions make me REALLY not think highly of Koons as a person. She seems like a creep to me.

Yeah. Many a time I wished I could play guitar like Jerry could. Never, ever wished for any of the other baggage he carried around with him.
